Discussion Question

I am about halfway through with Catch-22 and I am still confused about part of the story. Yossarian believes that there is a dead man in his tent named Mudd. I know he was a real soldier and everything, but I don't understand that Yossarian believes he's in the tent. Am I supposed to just get that Yossarian is crazy or is there something more that I am not understanding?

  1. Mudd is a real person, but he died before his paperwork was processed. Yossarian is upset about the dead man in his tent, but since the military hasn't processed his paperwork, they don't think Mudd exists. It's absurd, of course, but that's what Heller is aiming at. Everyone thinks Yossarian is crazy, but it's really everyone else that's crazy.

It's the whole Catch-22 thing. Yossarian wants to go home, but in order to go home, he has to have a medical condition. He wants to be diagnosed as mentally unstable, but in reality, he's the only sane one in the bunch.
